More than a “Few” South Africans
The Augsburg Raid cost 7 of Bomber Command’s 34 Lancaster’s. A year later, the 327 strong force that bombed the Skoda Armaments factory on April 16th included 197 Lancaster’s. Thirty-six aircraft including 18 Lancaster’s failed to return, 170 of the 250-aircrew posted “Missing” lost their lives including No 467 Squadron Lancaster navigator Flying Officer Brian McNair DFC, who was educated at Pretoria Boys High.
