The Dreaded Telegram

Twenty-five-year-old Lt George Suttie Hogg, 21-year-old Captain Robert Taverner Hildick and three other seconded SAAF airmen were killed in flying accidents during February. Hogg died from injuries on February 4th two days after his No 221 Squadron Wellington crashed after takeoff from their Italian base. Taverner and five others including seconded SAAF airmen Lt’s Barbour, Thom and Walters lost their lives when their Gibraltar based No 48 Squadron Coastal Command Hudson flew into the Estrela Mountain in Portugal on the 22nd.Hogg and Taverner were a few years apart at King Edwards in Johannesburg. Hogg completed his schooling at SACS in Cape Town, and his name is on the “Roll of Honour” at both schools. By unusual coincidence, two names separate them on the King Edwards “Roll of Honour” matching their service number differentiation of 205812 and 205814.
