SAAF Airmen in RAF Squadrons
Identifying the 83 secondments referred to by Major Watson so many years after the event may only be of academic interest but irrespective of numeric correctness, a comment made many years later by another seconded pilot in that group, Captain DCB Reynolds DFC, “we were asked if we would like to volunteer to fly with the RAF” reflected their youthful enthusiasm. They would not however have been aware that the RAF’s October request for 30 experienced SAAF pilots for Middle East secondment only attracted 17 volunteers as there were no assurances of immediate operational postings.
