The Dreaded Telegram

Twenty-seven-year-old Gordon Ward Brodziak lost his life on November 11th but, the “missing but believed to have lost his life” Air Ministry telegram his wife Vera shared with Dr and Mrs Brodziak in Durban would not have mentioned his No 608 Squadron Hudson had been shot down in error off the Algerian coast by HMS “Formidable” based Grumman Martlets. Brodziak completed his schooling at Bishops, volunteered for SAAF pilot training in 1940 and arrived in Scotland on the SS “Strathnaver” in late 1941, joined RAF Coastal Command’s No 608 Squadron and was another July 1942 RAFVR commission termination.
