More than a “Few” South Africans

“Operation Order No 143” was an expensive baptism, 7 Lancaster’s failed to return, 49 aircrew were posted “Missing” and casualties included 21 -year-old Flying Officer Hurworth Anthony Paul “Buster” Peall, a Rhodesian, educated at St Andrews College in Grahamstown who had wanted to study medicine in London 13 but joined the RAFVR in 1940 and trained as a fighter pilot. The No 91 Squadron Spitfire pilot was shot down over the Channel in April 1941 incurring injuries preventing him from flying fighters, but he then volunteered for Bomber Command.
