The Dreaded Telegram
The Grey College masters’ words masked the family anguish. Their son, Ian Murray Meiring interrupted his architectural studies to volunteer lost his life during a flying Baltimore a shipping strike in October 1943. Two years later, the Meiring family published a “Register” in his memory, recording the names of 258 RAF, RAFVR and SAAF airmen educated at Grey College in Bloemfontein.
