More than a “Few” South Africans
Seconded SAAF pilot Captain JJ Orr, one of a few South Africans who served on a Photographic Reconnaissance Unit was flying an unarmed No 2 PRU Spitfire out of Heliopolis in Egypt when he was shot down over the Mediterranean in March 1943. Rescued by a Greek fishing boat and handed over to the Italians as a “POW”, Orr made several escape attempts eventually succeeding after a transfer to Modena, a camp under German control. Captain JJ Orr then spent several months with the French Free forces. His “Military Cross” award was announced in the May 17th, 1946 “London Gazette”.
