SAAF Airmen in RAF Squadrons
Four of the five SAAF airmen who earned the DSO DFC & Bar. JPM Faure(left), JPD Human, DP Tilley and RHD Rogers (right) a SAAF Brigadier in 1972. Faure and Rogers flew Desert Air Force fighters, Human served briefly with 233 Wing Tilley, the only one who earned his decorations immediately flew Torpedo bombers.
SAAF Airmen in RAF Squadrons
Johan Daniel Wilhelm Human joined the SAAF after war was declared. Awarded the “Distinguished Flying Cross” in 1941 flying Spitfires, Major Human was commanding No 1 Squadron when his “Bar” was announced in 1942. He served with 233 Wing, was a Lt Colonel by 1943 commanding No 7 Wing. A full Colonel by 1944, he flew sorties when needed. His “Distinguished Service Order” was announced in March 1945.
