Not at Home for Christmas

Conditions were certainly more leisurely and, in complete contrast to the Stalag III evacuation nightmare but on more than one occasion, low-flying RAF Typhoon pilots mistook the many “POW’” groups for German troop columns and in Group Captain Wray’s words, “…..our column was shot up on one occasion by Allied aircraft. The casualties, three dead and seven wounded, were entirely confined to the Royal Navy section of the column….”.In addition, two airmen shot in the legs by a German guard required hospitalization, one of whom was South African born Rhodesian Flight Lt Neville Bowker.
