More than a “Few” South Africans

There were no doubt other South Africans among the 960 aircrews in a bomber force that included 96 Lancaster’s during the third “Thousand Bomber Raid” on June 25th but Flight Sergeant SG du Plooy was the only South African in the 12 crews flying No 206 Squadron Hudson’s. Forty-eight aircraft including three of the squadron’s Hudson’s failed to return from Bremen and almost 340 aircrew were posted “Missing”.

More than a “Few” South Africans

One of many who joined the RAFVR in Rhodesia, Stephen Gerald du Plooy flew convoy patrols and anti-submarine searches in No 206 Squadron Hudson’s in 1940 and involved in the rescue of General Sikorski, Commander in Chief of Free Polish Forces from France. He commissioned as a “Pilot Officer on Probation” in 1942 and was flying No 59 Squadron Hudson’s when his “Distinguished Flying Cross” award was announced in “The London Gazette” of the March 12th, 1943. Flight Lt SG du Plooy DFC resigned his commission in 1946.
